Juxtaposed Child Playing in the Stateless Nation.
Mural for: The Puerto Rican Cultural Center
Dimensions: 45 x 40 ft.
Execution: October 9, 2025 - November 2, 2025
Description:
Juxtaposed Child Playing in the Stateless Nation explores the tension between innocence and displacement, imagination and identity. The mural centers a child immersed in play—an act of creation and resilience—surrounded by taino abstracted symbols, a hybrid afro-indigenous mythical figures (half vejigante and half Caguana) and fragments two different landscapes. The composition layers domestic and fantastical spaces, suggesting the coexistence of multiple realities shaped by migration, history, and belonging.
Through vibrant color, surreal imagery, and spatial distortion, the work reflects on how nations, like identities, are fluid constructs continually reimagined through collective memory and personal agency. The child’s imaginative world becomes a metaphor for the creative act as resistance—asserting play as a political and poetic gesture within the complexities of a stateless condition informed by colonialism.

Description:
North panel highlights the foundational role of civic imagination and individual agency in the co-production of urban space. It emphasizes that reimagining our city begins with localized, everyday actions—what urban sociologists refer to as 'micro-level interventions'—that collectively shape the broader urban fabric. Symbolically, two children engaging in play from within a living room reflect the innate human capacity for creativity, visioning, and social construction. The domestic setting serves as a metaphor for grassroots engagement, reinforcing the idea that meaningful urban transformation originates at the household level and scales upward through collective participation. This approach aligns with place-based development strategies that value both bottom-up innovation and community ownership in shaping equitable, resilient cities.East panel underscores the imperative of fostering urban environments with the same intentionality and care as one would tend to a private garden. It illustrates a vision of inclusive, livable Communities where intergenerational engagement—such as strolling with a grandchild, micro-entrepreneurship through local vendors, cycling, and urban gardening—are integrated into daily life. Realizing these everyday urban pleasures depends fundamentally on perceived and actual safety, a critical social outcome often associated with well-designed multifamily developments. These housing typologies contribute not only to physical infrastructure improvements but also to measurable enhancements in quality of life. This includes reductions in crime rates through mechanisms like natural surveillance, strengthened neighborhood ties, and the cultivation of social capital. In turn, such outcomes generate long-term value for both residents and investors, aligning social impact with economic sustainability.South Panel emphasizes the necessity of translating community vision into tangible action toward neighborhood improvement. It underscores the value of recognizing and uplifting the labor force—particularly essential and local workers—as key stakeholders in creating livable, inclusive environments. By honoring their contri butions, we reinforce collective well-being and promote shared prosperity. This approach reflects a socio-economic model where equitable investment in human capital directly enhances neighborhood livability, social cohesion, and overall quality of life.

The mural unfolds in a flowing movement, with the symbols gradually saturating the composition until the image is abruptly interrupted by the numbers "1492." These fading into white senses a moment of mystery, as a result the erasure of the historical accounts of the natives, by the ‘destruction of the indies’ accounted by Bartolomé de las Casas on 1542.
